Omega 3 (Alpha-linolenic acid ALA) is an essential fatty acid which the body cannot produce and therefore must be present in our diet.
In the body the omega 3 is then converted to EPA and DHA

The main sources of omega 3 are oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines,herring and fresh tuna. Sadly though many of these fish contain high levels of pollutants such as Dioxins, PCBs and Mercury and the risk to our health may outweigh the benefit.
Therefore to avoid this risk it is necessary to supplement with omega 3 fish oils which are free from contaminants like Mercury.
